The Scioto Foundation
is pleased to announce the creation of the C. Dewey Lykins Memorial Scholarship Fund, established to honor the long-time Bloom-Vernon School District administrator and educator.
To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a senior at South Webster High School, have a minimum GPA of 2.5/4.O, and be enrolled in a four-year college or university. In addition, applicants must be well-rounded as determined by academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community involvement.
Students also must complete a scholarship application and written essay, as well as provide two letters of recommendation from South Webster High School administrators, faculty, advisors and/or coaches. A committee consisting of a SWHS administrator and guidance counselor, and a member of the Lykins family will make annual scholarship selections.
The amounts available for distribution for the scholarship will be based upon the then current spending policy of the Scioto Foundation, or will be the net income when not otherwise provided in the Foundation's then current spending policy.
"Dad dedicated his life to improving the educational process and experience for all in the community," said Lykins' son Matthew representing the family. "We are privileged to establish the scholarship in his name to help kids in this area further their education."
"We would like to thank the many volunteers and supporters of the initial golf outing held last fall at Franklin Valley Golf Course to help raise funds for the scholarship," Matt continued. "We hope to make the outing an annual event to allow us to increase the amount of the awards. I cannot think of a better way to honor Dad's name than by joining golf and education together."
Lykins, a resident of South Webster, was born July 12, 1940, in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of the late Reverend Charles and Nellie Maloney Lykins. He passed away at the age of 67 on September 10, 2007.
Lykins served a superintendent of the Bloom-Vernon Local School District for ten years and retired from that position in 1990. Following his retirement, he worked as an educational consultant on many state-wide, regional, and local projects.
Prior to his term as superintendent, Lykins was South Webster High School principal for two years, elementary principal for four years, transportation supervisor for two years, and special projects director for fifteen years. He was an English and government teacher at Shawnee State University, South Webster High School, Minford High School, and Valley High School.
As a teacher, he was very involved with extra-curricular activities. He coached basketball, baseball, and track; directed numerous class plays and drama productions; initiated the Quiz bowl academic competition team and sponsored junior/senior proms and class field trips. He also initiated the South Webster High School Hall of Fame.
Lykins received a Masters of Arts degree in English from Marshall University in 1969 and a Bachelor of Science degree in English from Rio Grande College in 1966. He graduated from South Webster High School in 1958.
Prior to and during his career as an educator, Dewey worked as a promoter and scorer at several auto race tracks, a forklift and dozer operator, a laborer and truck driver at the family sawmill and pallet production facility, and a laboratory technician at Dayton-Walther Foundry. His favorite times were spent golfing, reading, playing softball, and following the Jeeps. He cherished every moment with his grandchildren.
Dewey married Linda Faye Beesler Lykins, in 1961. His son Matt and wife Becky and two children reside in Grove City, Ohio and a daughter, Michelle Lykins, lives in Richmond, Virginia.
